The New Westminster Salmonbellies might have been feeling good when they walked off the floor after the first period of their opening game of their Western Lacrosse Association semifinal with the Victoria Shamrocks, but they certainly weren't when they headed to their locker room for the second intermission. Nor after it was over.

The Shamrocks defeated the visiting Salmonbellies 13-8 Wednesday to take the first game of the best-of-seven series.

The ’Bellies scored three unanswered goals in the last 10 minutes of the first period to take a 6-5 lead after 20 minutes. But any good feeling they had didn't last long as the Shamrocks scored six times while blanking the ’Bellies in the second period. It was the second time in as many meetings that the Shamrocks had outscored the Salmonbellies 6-0 in the second period.

In the third, Victoria extended its lead to 13-6 before cruising to victory.

Jordan McBride had three goals and an assist for New West. Clark Colton had the reverse, one goal and three assists. Also scoring for the Salmonbellies was Curtis Hodgson, Logan Schuss, Jesse Fehr and Josh Byrne, a call-up from the Jr. Salmonbellies.

Alexis Buque made 32 saves on 45 shots in the New West net before being replaced for the final 11 minutes by Neil Tyacke, who stopped all seven shots he faced.

Game 2 is at Queen's Park Arena on Friday, 6 p.m. They'll play again in Victoria on Sunday and back in New West again on Wednesday, 7:45 p.m.
