Lakers get Game 1 win

The Burnaby Lakers jumped on the Maple Ridge Burrards early to take the opening game of their best-of-seven Western Lacrosse Association semifinal.

Robert Church scored four goals and assisted on another and goaltender Tyler Richards made 34 saves as the Lakers downed the Burrards 10-5 at Bill Copeland Arena on Wednesday.

Burnaby jumped out to a 4-1 lead after the first period and were ahead 8-4 after two.

Dane Stevens scored twice and assisted on three others. Tyler Digby had a goal and three assists. Other singles went to Shaun Dhaliwal, Bryan Safarik and Jackson Decker.

Game 2 of the series is in Maple Ridge on Saturday, 7:45 p.m. with the third game at Copeland on Monday at 7:45 p.m. Game 4 will be in Maple Ridge the next night. If needed, Game 5 will be at Copeland on Thursday, Aug. 14, Game 6 in Maple Ridge on Saturday, Aug. 15 and Game 7 back in Burnaby on Monday, Aug. 18.
