Courtenay resident Michael Zbarsky will be driving his 1988 Chevrolet Camaro in the 27th annual B.C. Historic Motor Races at Mission Raceway Park on Aug. 16-17.

Racers from Alberta, Washington, Oregon and California will be challenging all the B.C. racers in open wheel (formula) and closed wheel (sedans and sports car) classes in the Vintage Racing Club of British Columbia (VRCBC) event.

The British Columbia Historic Motor Races have run since 1976, when they were first staged at the famous Westwood track in Coquitlam until their current home at the multi-purpose racing complex at Mission.

A VRCBC spokesperson said then British Columbia Historic Motor Races is the largest vintage race event in Western Canada and a significant event in the Pacific Northwest, expecting 100 vintage and historic racing cars and as many as 3,000 spectators in attendance.

For 2014 BCHMR is bringing back the popular Hagerty Formula Festival with the very quick open wheel purebred racing and sports racing car. Plans also include a celebration of the 50th anniversary of the arrival of Japanese sports cars in Canada with several of these historic cars participating in the racing as well as a Sunday afternoon parade.

Always popular with classic car enthusiasts who display their fascinating cars is a special area, known as “the Field of Dreams” creating a unique show of its own. Adding to the festival atmosphere are the many sponsors’ booths offering everything from automobilia and artwork, to automotive product displays.

The food concessions, informative track-side commentary and excellent grandstand viewing all make this an entertaining weekend for families as well as long-time enthusiasts.

The VRCBC is currently working on an additional lineup of interesting racing cars, racing celebrities and fun activities. As these are finalized, they will be announced on both the club’s website: www.vrcbc.ca and the event website www.bchmr.ca, as well as through the press.

The VRCBC is a non-profit member organization, which organizes a series of racing-related activities and events, including the annual BCHMR weekend. For more information contact Tom Johnston at tomjohnston@shaw.ca or 604-922-2722.
