Abbotsford's athletes have gotten off to a terrific start at the 2014 BC Summer Games in Nanaimo, and Vikramjit Gondara is leading the way.

Gondara, a thrower extraordinaire out of W.J. Mouat Secondary, has already picked up two gold medals – in the discus (winning throw of 50.26 metres) and the hammer (55.83m). He's continuing his momentum after a solid showing at the provincial high school track and field championships which saw him earn a silver medal in the junior boys hammer.

Special Olympian Paige Norton has also excelled on the track, winning bronze in the long jump (2.42m) and shot put (4.14m).

Devon Kular of Abbotsford picked up a silver medal in the 4x400m relay, joining forces with Chilliwack's Marcus Aubin, Langley's Will Riley and Surrey's Luke Forsythe to clock a runner-up time of 3:53.91.

The Fraser Valley Zone 3 squad is setting the early pace in the medal standings, with 73 (27 gold, 26 silver, 20 bronze). They're ahead up Vancouver Island-Central Coast (58 medals) and Vancouver-Squamish (41).

Over 2,400 athletes are competing at 19 different sports in venues across Nanaimo, Duncan, and Parksville during the Summer Games, which opened Thursday and wrap up Sunday. The Games serve as an essential development opportunity for young athletes who strive to compete at the national and international level.

Abbotsford will play host to the 2016 BC Summer Games.
