With a crowd of friends and family in attendance, Sophie Schmidt scored for Team Canada in an international women's soccer friendly vs. Germany on Wednesday at BC Place in Vancouver.

The Abbotsford midfielder's goal came in the 54th minute, when she chipped a high-arcing shot over German keeper Nadine Angerer off a feed from Diana Matheson.

FIFA No. 2-ranked Germany prevailed by a 2-1 count over No. 7 Canada, though, thanks to goals by Lena Lotzen (29th minute) and Simone Laudehr (65th).

"I'd like to say I perfectly planned that, placed it beautifully," Schmidt told reporters with a chuckle, reflecting on her goal. "But that probably is not the truth. I'm just happy it went in.

"We played well, minus some breakdowns that led them to some breakaways. But I thought we executed what we wanted to well – we got on the scoresheet, and I thought we had good momentum, especially in the first half. It's just a matter of finding a way to keep that throughout the second."

Schmidt and her Team Canada mates now return to their club teams, reconvening for friendlies against Japan Oct. 25 in Edmonton and Oct. 28 in Vancouver.
