Schultz, Tjernagel power NWSS to provincial title
Two girls took the Hyacks to the top.
New Westminster secondary won its first provincial high school track and field championship team title in Langley on the weekend. The school’s unprecedented victory was mostly thanks to Grade 10 jumper Nina Schultz and Grade 11 sprinter Raquel Tjernagel.
Schultz won the high jump (1.75 metres) and triple jump (11.66 m) at McLeod Athletic Park Friday and Saturday. That was on top of her victory in the women’s heptathlon held the previous weekend in Abbotsford.
Tjernagel proved she is the fastest girl in B.C. by winning the 100-m (11.93 seconds) and 200-m (24.44). They along with Amanda Zacharuk and Emily Chilton won the Hyacks’ 4x400-m relay (4:56.31). Schultz was named the meet’s top girl performer for her four first-place finishes.
They didn’t do it all by themselves, though. The duo weren’t the only ones from NWSS to win. Ethan Strome took the boys 400-m hurdles in 55.70 seconds. Bogdan Pavel was second in the 100-m hurdles (14.96). Strome, Pavel, Matthew Seymour and Jaime Shiho were third in the boys 4x100 relay.
The excellent results gave NWSS 89 team points, one more than perennial powerhouse Oak Bay.
