A New Westminster native and a former Salmonbellies Mann Cup goalie did in the hometown team at Queen's Park Arena on Thursday.

The Burnaby Lakers edged the Salmonbellies 12-11 in overtime. Former Jr. ’Bellies star Tyler Digby scored the only goal of the OT at 7:54. It came somewhat against the run of the play with the Salmonbellies outshooting the Lakers 8-2 in the extra frame. Tyler Richards, former New West goaltender, stopped all eight of those shots and made 47 saves in the game.

It was Burnaby's Western Lacrosse Association season opener while New West fell to 1-1.

The Lakers jumped out to a 5-2 lead after the first period forcing the Salmonbellies to play from behind for most of the game.

Burnaby held a 10-8 lead with 4:11 to play when New Westminster head coach Steve Goodwin decided to pull starting goalie Neil Tyacke. He had stopped just 16 of 26 shots. Tyacke, a former Jr. Salmonbellie, was replaced by Eastern recruit Alexis Buque, who led the Whitby Warriors to a Minto Cup championship last year. He stopped 16 of the 18 shots he faced.

Digby's goal was assisted by Jason Jones who finished the game with four goals and three helpers along with firing 10 shots. Justin Salt scored three for Burnaby while Dane Stevens had two goals and two assists. Other goals were scored by Robert Church and T.J. Cowx.

Jordan McBride did his best to lead the Salmonbellies charge scoring three times on 15 shots. He also had an assist on Eric Lewthwaite's goal with 31 seconds remaining in the third period to force overtime. New West scored five of the game's final six goals as they fired 19 shots in the second period and 20 in the third.

Sean Lundstrom and Colton Clark scored twice for New West with singles going to Logan Schuss, Richard Lachlan and Kyle Ross. Lewthwaite also had three assists.

The Lakers will play their home opener against the Nanaimo Timbermen (1-2-1) at Bill Copeland Arena on Friday, 7 p.m. They'll play host to the Langley Thunder (1-3-0) next Friday at 7:45 p.m.

The Salmonbellies will visit the Maple Ridge Burrards (2-1-0) Sunday before taking on the Victoria Shamrocks (1-0-1) at Queen's Park Thursday (June 5), 7:45 p.m.
