Young Blitz finish fifth at nationals
The Fraser Valley Volleyball Club Blitz showed they may have been ranked a little too low to start the club volleyball championships.
The team was seeded 27th out of the 96 teams in attendance at the national U18 girls volleyball championships earlier this month at the University of Alberta in Edmonton.
Playing against U18 tier 1 age bracket — and with two of their own players playing up two years — the Blitz more than held their own and returned with a fifth-place finish.
“We discussed it as a team and decided to play up a year to push ourselves and our physical and mental development. The team worked very hard for each other, gelled as sisters, and we finished strong, which gives the players and us coaches a positive feeling for next year when we will play in our own age bracket," said David Carrasco, head coach of the Blitz. Carrasco coaches with TWU, coached at the University of Manitoba, and coached girls club teams in Manitoba to provincial and nationals championship so his vast experience helped the team succeed in the older bracket.
The Blitz went 2-1 on the first day of the tournament and won their pool via tiebreaker based on the number of sets won.
The second day of the championships was the power pool stage as they were grouped with the top two Alberta teams and their local rivals, the Coquitlam Ducks. The Blitz went 2-1 to finish second, which advanced them to the quarter-final stage, but a loss to the Cobras, a Manitoba squad, derailed their championship dreams.
The Cobras would win the national championship.
The team includes: Paige Bergen, Nicole Chevrier, Laura Findlay, Emma Kastelein, Cara Keturakis, Angelica Kilberg, Karah Kostamo, Brooke Mothe, Brie O'Reilly, Cassidy Pearson, and coaches David and Lauren Carrasco.
