Express leading at 2-0

The B.C. Hockey League champion Coquitlam Express are 2-0 heading into tonight’s game against the Yorkton Terriers at the Crescent Point Energy Western Canada Cup in Dauphin, Man.

The Express stopped the Winnipeg Blues 2-1 Monday night at Credit Union Place, but lost high-scoring captain Ryan Rosenthal when he was rubbed off the puck into the boards midway through the second period.

Rosenthal skated off the ice in clear frustration and did not return until the third period but only lasted for one shift before calling it a night.

Rosenthal and Brendan Lamont scored for the Express, while Warren Callis replied for Winnipeg.

Rosenthal, with a deuce, and Canon Pieper handled the offence as Coquitlam opened with a 3-1 win over Alberta champion Spruce Grove Saints Sunday night.

Spruce Grove, with former Viper Geoff Crisfield on their back end, edged Yorkton 3-2 in overtime Tuesday afternoon. Both teams are 1-2.

The top two teams advance to the Royal Bank Cup nationals, May 10-18, in Vernon.
