Greene fires up Maroons

Morning Star Staff

Layne Greene supplied two tries as the Fulton Maroons mauled the Kalamalka Lakers 24-0 in North Zone Senior Boys Rugby League action Thursday afternoon.

Carl Main and Davron Polok added tries, while Greene and  Caleb McCuaig each booted one convert for the 2-0 Maroons.

Fulton coach Mike Scheller used several junior call-ups due to injuries.

“The juniors played great and really helped our team out,” said Scheller. “I thought our kids played tough hard rugby. We were a little more physical than Kal and it helped us. Layne Greene played fantastic at scrum half and did a great job leading our attack.

“Davron Polok, at eight-man, also had some great open-field runs and he played a solid team game. Flanker Sikandar ahmad was a tackling machine. Junior call-ups Tyler Liefke, Taran Lafond and Colton Annis all played great as wings and fullbacks.”

In junior rugby season-opening play Wednesday, Fulton stuffed Kal 50-0 behind two tries each from Josh Baker, Main and Mykl Drabiuk.

Jeff Han, Satchel McDermid and Dawson Horvath also earned tries, while Han kicked four converts and Kobe Romanovitch had one.

“Mykl Drabuik had a great rugby debut for us,” said Scheller. “He was tough in the scrums and made some great runs. Landon Currie had a very good game at standoff, prop Kurt Banks made some tough tackles all over the field, and centre Carl Main ran hard. The lock duo of Baker and Horvath were also good, and Tyler Liefke, at scrum half, was solid.”

Lakers brush back Panthers 2-1

Kal brushed back the VSS Panthers 2-1 in a chippy senior girls soccer game that featured four yellow cards Thursday at Marshall Field.

Hannah Taylor gave the Lakers an early lead before VSS answered late in the first half.

After a red card saw Kal reduced to 10 players, both teams struggled to find offensive chances.  Kal secured the win when Teigen Moore found Emily Thorlakson at the top of the 18. After a couple of nifty moves, Thorlakson slotted the ball home with less than two minutes to play.

No score was reported from Fulton-PVSS Saints. Kal visits Fulton next Thursday while VSS heads to Armstrong to play the Saints.
