Beaver Valley Nitehawks on a roll in Keystone round robin.
The Beaver Valley Nitehawks are on a roll at the Western Canada Keystone Cup in Abbotsford. With two games to play, the Nitehawks have won three straight in the round-robin format of the Junior B championship and are on the verge of making the final on Sunday.
In their opening match Thursday morning, the Hawks trounced the home team Abbotsford Pilots 10-2, on the strength of a four-goal performance from Dallas Calvin, the winning goal from Sam Swanson, and a three point night from Taylor Stafford.
In their second match against the Saskatoon Quakers, AP goaltender Carson Schamerhorn would get the start and stop 35-of-36 shots to lead the Hawks to a 5-1 win over the Saskatchewan representative. The line of Calvin, Stafford, and Fuller would again lead the Nitehawks with Calvin netting two goals and two assists, while Stafford and Fuller each added a goal and an assist. Mitch Foyle would round out the scoring for the Hawks on the first day of action.
On Friday, the Nitehawks played just one game against what looked to be a tough Blackfalds Wranglers team from Alberta, but B.V. continued their strong play outshooting the Wranglers 45 to 30 on their way to a 5-1 victory. After Ryan Edwards opened the scoring less than three minutes into the game, Stafford would net the winner on a power play, finishing a pass from Calvin. Swanson meanwhile set up back-to-back goals by Kyle Hope and Hayden Chase on the same shift just passed the midway mark of the second to give the Hawks a 4-0 lead.
Stafford would net his second of the night on another power play at 15:27 of the third, before the Wranglers broke Brett Clark’s shutout bid at 8:17.
The Nitehawks finish the round robin Saturday, with games against the Selkirk Fishermen from Manitoba at 10:45 a.m., and the Thunder Bay Northern Hawks from Northern Ontario at 7 p.m. B.V. can secure a spot in Sunday’s final with a win against the Fishermen.
