Two tries each from Layne Greene and Ryan Buick lifted the Fulton Maroons to a 31-0 win over Kelowna’s Okanagan Mission Huskies in high school senior boys rugby action Thursday at Grahame Park.

The Maroons led 21-0 at the break.

Karl Main had the other try for the winners while Greene went 3-5 on conversions.

“I was really happy with our first game of the season,” said Maroons head coach Mike Scheller. “We did not have much practice time leading up to the game due to spring break and poor early weather, but our kids stepped up and played very well.

“The score flatters us a bit as we scored on their breakdowns and mistakes. We scored three tries on long runs and great individual efforts from Greene, Main and Buick. The first half was pretty even, but the second half was ours.”

Scheller gave props to Maroons prop Lucky Banga, flanker Sikandar Ahmad and rugby rookies Caleb McCuaig and AJ Jammu.

n The Vernon Panthers fell 45-5 to the Shuswap Selects in Youth Rugby League exhibition action.

This is a development program, in a fun atmosphere, for kids aged 14 to 16.

“We really were outclassed today,” said Panthers coach Ian Winston.

Michael Smith opened the scoring for the Panthers, who next play on the road against Kamloops Westsyde.
