Derek Vinge wins Comox Valley RV Half Marathon

DEREK VINGE OF the Comox Valley Road Runners took first place at the 2014 Comox Valley RV Half Marathon on March 23 in a time of 1:11.59.

The sixth race in the Frontrunners Island Race Series – the Comox Valley RV Half Marathon – was held March 23 in Courtenay. The race – hosted by the Comox Valley Road Runners – featured six age group course records.

Local runner Derek Vinge from the Comox Valley Road Runners won in 1:11:59. Second was Thomas Holme (Prairie Inn Harriers) in 1:13:43 and third was Nicholas Walker (Frontrunners Athletic Club) in 1:13:55.

Top female was Claire Morgan (Prairie Inn Harriers) finishing in 1:19:52, second was Kristen Smart (Vancouver Falcons Athletic Club) in 1:23:41 and third was Christy Lovig in 1:24:08.

Top Master was fourth-place finisher Vince Brotherston (Comox Valley Road Runners) in 1:16:39 and top female Master was Wendy Simms (Bastion Running Club) in 1:28:27.

"It was a very successful day with perfect conditions for racing for the 476 finishers. There were many personal bests as well as the six age group course records," said race director Wayne Crowe.

The course records were set in the W20-24 by Kaylee Beales (1:26:20 – a tied record); M50-54 by Vince Brotherston (1:16:39); W60-64 by Lois Klingbeil (1:37:44); M 60-64 by Les Disher (1:24:44); W65-69 by Roslyn Smith of the Road Runners (1:39:26) and W75-79 by Christine Rodgers (2:19:33).

Prairie Inn Harriers lead the Island Series club standings with 2,884 points, with Comox Valley Road Runners second (1,888) and Bastion Running Club third (1,644). For full results go to: http://racedaytiming.ca/results/ComoxHalf2014.

The half-marathon was part of the CVRR's annual Race Weekend, which included a 5K Fun Run on Saturday.
