Salle La Fleche fencers from the valley are proving to be tough competition.

They proved that point during the Tri City Fencing Academy's youth tournament in Coquitlam. The club earned two gold medals, one silver and four bronze in various events.

Both gold medals were won by Shiming Huang. The first came in Cadet foil and the other in Junior foil.

Andrew Rigg was a silver medalist in Y12 sabre. Neav Murphy-Williams took bronze in the same event.

Other bronze medalists included: Jaiwei Wu in Junior and Cadet sabre, and Amara Thorne in Junior sabre.

The fencers then went back to the Lower Mainland last weekend for the Lazar Open at UBC.

"Sunday, they competed against fencers who are on the national circuit,'' pointed out coach Georgia Newsome.

Huang of Salle La Fleche and Island Oak High School again fought his way into the medals at the event.

He shared the joint bronze medal with Isaac Carter-Hughs from the Victoria Capital City Fencing Club.

"The two youngest fencers of 15 participants held their own among the more experienced fencers and show great promise for the future,'' noted Newsome.

Wu reached a medal position again with a bronze in Junior sabre.
