The Abbotsford News's high school sports blog, Students of the Game, features local athletes sharing their experiences and unique perspectives. Today, W.J. Mouat multi-sport athlete Callum Pilgrim discusses her basketball team's provincial championship berth, and looks ahead to softball and track seasons.

These past few weeks have been very busy with basketball as provincials are just around the corner.

There have definitely been lots of tough games and practices that will hopefully pay off in the future. At the Fraser Valley championships last week we competed very well coming in third place and earning a berth to the provincials. Even though in the semifinal game against No. 1-ranked Brookswood we made a few key mistakes both offensively and defensively, I’m confident that we are completely prepared for the intense week to come at provincials.

With basketball season coming to an end it is also time to start preparing for track and field and softball season.

In a few weeks it will be time to get back into the full swing of practices with the Valley Royals Track and Field Club. Even though I have been running on my own to stay in shape, nothing compares to a Royals track workout. I know it will be an adjustment going from fast-paced basketball to long distance running, and that the first few weeks back will be very hard. But I am very excited and nervous to see what this track season has to come.

With the start of track also comes the start of my favorite season, softball season. At the begining of February my team, the Fraser Valley Fusion, travelled to Las Vegas for a tournament. The team this year has had lots of changes and many of us have never played with each other before. Even though at first we were a little rusty we started to gain more chemistry on and off the field and we won the consolation final of the tournament.

It has so far been a very good start and I’m excited for our league games to finally start.
