Spartans through to final four
The Trinity Western Spartans are one victory away from a fourth-straight trip to the Canadian Interuniversity Sport national championships.
The Spartans women's volleyball won their best-of-three quarter-final series last week against the Regina Cougars 2-0, winning both matches in straight sets.
The games were played at the Langley Events Centre on Feb. 13 and 14 and earn the Spartans a spot in this week's Canada West Final Four championships.
"I have a lot of respect for that Regina team," said Trinity Western coach Ryan Hofer.
"They have some talented players but we just needed to play our game tonight and we did that."
Hofer said the key was for his team to serve and pass well, and they did so in both aspects.
"And then we just wanted to make smart decisions with our attacks," he added.
The Spartans used a dominating serving effort on both nights combining for 20 aces over the two games.
They won 3-0 (25-19,25-16,25-20) the first night and 3-0 (25-16,25-16,25-19) the second to complete the sweep.
Royal Richardson had five aces each night while Sophie Carpentier had a combined 26 kills to go along with her three aces.
Alicia Perrin finished with 17 kills and 13 blocks and Kristen Moncks had 18 digs.
UBC's War Memorial Gymnasium will be the site of the Canada West Final Four championships on Friday and Saturday (Feb. 21 and 22) with the top three teams advancing to nationals in Regina.
The Spartans (17-5) face Manitoba (14-8) in one semifinal while UBC (18-4) faces UBC-Okanagan (12-10) in the other.
