Calvin leads Beaver Valley Nitehawks to three weekend wins

Braden Fuller would score the winner and Dallas Calvin added an insurance marker late in the game  as the Nitehawks beat Grand Forks 7-5, for its third victory in as many days.

It was three lucky-sevens in a row as the Nitehawks scored 21 goals in three games, pummeling the Princeton Posse 7-0 Friday, and taking out the Castlegar Rebels 7-4 Saturday, before defeating the Border Bruins in Grand Forks Sunday. But it was forward Dallas Calvin with his biggest output of the season, a six-point game against Castlegar, that highlighted the weekend tilts.

The Trail native caught fire, scoring seven times, including a hat trick against Grand Forks, and adding six assists in the three weekend matches.

The 13-point eruption lifts the 19-year-old Calvin into fifth spot in league scoring with 33 goals and 35 assists for 68 points in 32 games this season.

Beaver Valley jumped out to a 3-0 first-period lead, on a power play goal from Jeremy Lucchini and a pair of markers including a shorthanded goal from Calvin.

Riley Brandt would put the Hawks up 4-0 early in the second on assists from Fuller and Lyle Frank, before Grand Forks got on the board.

The Bruins Tucker Brown scored his own shorthanded goal, but Brandt would restore the four-goal lead at 9:05 of the second. However, Michael Rand cut the lead to three on a late power play goal.

Fuller would net the winner seven seconds into the third but the Bruins would claw back within one scoring three straight before Calvin put it out of reach.

Fuller also had a good game Sunday chipping in with a goal and three assists, while Riley Brandt had a three-point game for the Hawks. The Nitehawks outshot the Bruins 51 to 40.

Beaver Valley holds down top spot in the Neil Murdoch division with 67 points, one up on Nelson who split a pair of games with division foes, losing 5-2 to Grand Forks Friday before taking out Spokane 4-3 on Sunday.

The Nitehawks next home game goes Friday at 7:30 p.m. versus Golden.
