VIDEO: Canucks Drop 3rd Straight With Loss to Phoenix Coyotes
The Vancouver Canucks closed out their three-game road trip with another shutout loss, this time to the Phoenix Coyotes and goalie Mike Smith, who had 29 saves in an unblemished performance.
Antoine Vermette scored a powerplay 12:51 into the first period, with a cross-ice pass that banked off a sliding Dan Hamhuis and in, past Canucks goalie Eddie Lack.
Vancouver went 0-for-7 on the powerplay and has scored just once in its past three games, during which it's been outscored by a 11-1 margin.
"It's a team that's having a hell of a time making an offensive play," said Canucks head coach John Tortorella (NHL.com). "Our power play doesn't work again, and it's been tough sledding.
"We're grown men here. It's a big part of our business... to make big plays at key times. We have to get something done. We throw one over an open net. At the end, we can't even get our power play set up? That's unacceptable. Our top guys need to lead the way here. I believe they will, but it has to happen pretty quickly."
Eddie Lack made 22 saves on 23 shots for the Canucks, who have won just once in January.
Vancouver takes on the Calgary Flames on Saturday at Rogers Arena, 7 p.m. PST on CBC's Hockey Night in Canada.
