Did the Whitecaps just lose Camilo Sanvezzo to Mexico?
Expect the details to come. But hold your breath, Vancouver.
Controversy and shock accompanied two photos posted to Twitter on Monday afternoon by Mexican club Gallos Blancos de Queretaro, showing Whitecaps striker Camilo Sanvezzo in the team's jersey.
Reports last week said Sanvezzo was to sign with Queretaro, and the club's president Adolfo Rios said he was under the impression Vancouver's star was a free agent – which he says he was led to believe through conversations with Sanvezzo's agent.
"In that same interview, the president told CentralDeportiva.com that the player and his agent have accepted the Mexican side's offer," reported MLSSoccer.com.
The photo, embedded below, was accompanied by a message written in Spanish which translates to "And also Camilo Sanvezzo, who is here to greet all our fans of #Gallos".
The 25-year-old Sanvezzo is the reigning MLS Golden Boot winner, after scoring 22 goals to pace the league and Vancouver.
The Brazilian star is under contract with Vancouver through 2014.
The Whitecaps have responded to Monday's Tweet and last week's reports, saying Sanvezzo is still under contract with the team and they are "working with the MLS on this matter".
"What we wanted to do, first and foremost, was make sure that everyone is aware of the fact that he is contracted to the Whitecaps," Vancouver FC president Bob Lenarduzzi told reporters on Monday.
"There's not much more than we could have said. He is contracted to the Whitecaps. We have nothing more to say."
