Knights beat Bulldogs, must face mighty Rams

Any celebration the St. Thomas More Knights may have had following their first-round B.C. AAA high school football playoff victory Friday night was tempered with the knowledge of who their next opponent would be.

The Knights downed Belmont Bulldogs 43-21 at Burnaby Lake Sports Complex West to advance to the provincial quarter-finals against another Victoria team, the Mount Douglas Rams, the top-ranked team in the province. They face each other in Victoria on Friday at 2 p.m.

The Rams have rolled through the season undefeated in nine games against B.C. opponents outscoring them 449-70, including a 69-6 trouncing of Belmont on Nov. 1.

Wide receiver turned quarterback Malcolm Lee rushed for 193 yards and scored three touchdowns to lead STM, ranked sixth in the province, over the ninth-ranked Bulldogs. Shane Noel had nine carries for 103 yards and a touchdown while fellow Grade 11 running back Andrew Flett had 10 carries for 84 yards and a TD. Drew Belgrave also scored a touchdown on a fumble recovery for the Knights and led the defence with 12 tackles. Safety Anthony Carteri had 11.
