UFV soccer teams battling for playoff berths
The University of the Fraser Valley women's and men's soccer teams endured a rough weekend, combining for just one draw over the course of four games.
The Cascades women notched that lone point, battling the Regina Cougars to a 2-2 tie on Saturday in Chilliwack.
UFV, coming off a 1-0 loss to the Saskatchewan Huskies the night before, took a 2-1 lead into halftime on goals by Amanda Carruthers and Tristan Corneil. But the Cougars managed to notch the equalizer, as Tayler Firth scored midway through the second half.
The two teams are battling tooth and nail for Canada West playoff berths – Regina (4-5-2, 14 points) sits in seventh place, while the Cascades (3-4-3, 12 points) occupy the eighth and final spot, just two points up on ninth-place Mount Royal. The UFV women wrap up the regular season on the road this weekend vs. Winnipeg and Manitoba.
The Cascades men dropped both their games on the road last week by matching 2-0 scores, to the Alberta Golden Bears on Friday and the Saskatchewan Huskies on Saturday, and now find themselves clinging to the third and final playoff spot in the Pacific Division of Canada West.
UFV is 4-7-1 for 13 points, just three up on Trinity Western (3-6-1).
The Cascades men finish the regular season with home dates vs. the Calgary Dinos on Friday and the Lethbridge Pronghorns on Saturday.
