A night of firsts for Cowichan LMG
Cowichan LMG Pringle had to allow a goal sometime.
It's just unfortunate for the Div. 1 Island Soccer League team that the first goal it gave up this season also coincided with its first loss in five games.
Cowichan gave up an early goal around the five-minute mark on a corner kick and that was all the Saanich Fusion needed for a 1-0 victory in the second game of a senior soccer doubleheader Saturday at the Ladysmith Turf.
"We just kind of poorly defended it,'' said Cowichan coach Glen Martin of the game's lone goal.
"After that, we were just chasing the game, trying to score.''
Cowichan had its chances but couldn't make anything count. Saanich goalie Ryan Hulstein was there to make the saves whenever shots at the net were finally generated.
"To not get one goal is pretty amazing,'' said Martin. "We actually played quite well. We did everything we could.''
The coach juggled the lineup after Jesse Winter started the game but suffered a recurring injury. Kevan Brown was put in his place at centre back.
The result tightened up the division standings considerably, with unlikely contenders like Lakehill Reds and Vic West emerging along with the usual favourites like Cowichan, Saanich, Bays United Liquor Plus and even Nanaimo.
"It's going to be an interesting league this year,'' Martin conceded.
Ryan Andre was cited as the Cowichan MVP of the game in the hard-fought loss.
Castaways, one of the division's bottom three, hosts Cowichan Sunday at Victoria's Finlayson Park.
United on a roll in Div. 2
Cowichan United won its fourth straight after two losses to open the season and has climbed into second place in Div. 2.
Cowichan United blanked Prospect Lake 5-0 in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader in Ladysmith.
Jorden Korven scored a hat trick and Kevin Smith notched two more. There were many other chances that could have made the score much worse.
Darian Achurch picked up the shutout.
United has a big game Saturday at 4 p.m. at Victoria's Lochsyde Park against first-place Saanich Fusion. The Fusion is four points ahead of United.
