Soccer has always been a natural fit for Amanda Wise and her skills keep advancing with age.
“I was never really the type of ‘girly’ kid who liked gymnastics or whatever so I thought I’d try the muddy sports and it went really well so I stayed,’’ she said.
Wise, 16, a Grade 11 student at Cowichan Secondary School is now playing in the U17 ranks that gets pretty competitive, “especially when we get into our championships and going to provincials and stuff,’’ she said.
“It gets pretty rough — lots of stress.’’
Wise seems to thrive under the pressure and makes things happen at the forward position.
“Amanda moves into space really well and creates openings for herself and she’s got a beautiful shot,’’ said coach Greg Poirier.
“When the ball’s on the ground, she hits it really well and it’s quick.’’
Wise strives to make her team better on and off the field.
“I like to bring lots of positive attitude to my team, like when we do our cheer, I really like to amp up the team,’’ she said.
“But I really, really like to work on my shots and keeping the ball with me and not kicking it ahead and having to chase after it.’’
