Curling season opens Saturday
A new roof, walls and insulation may not make members of the Royal City Curling Club better curlers, but it will keep them more comfortable as they open their 48th season on Saturday.
The ice has been put in and the lines painted by the club's new ice maker, Mike Merklinger, who's created ice for local and national competitions. The $160,000 worth of improvements to the building will help keep that ice consistent and competitive, said RCCC president Doug McKinnon.
The season's first event on Saturday will be a Bowlspiel, that combines curling and lawn bowling. There will also be registration for the club's junior programs from noon - 2 p.m.
Those programs will look to create the next Andrew Bilesky, who represented British Columbia at the 2013 Brier.
The club will also continue to host the Premium Curling League, that features some of the province's top curlers including former national and world champions, every Wednesday night.
