Gillies grabs hat trick for Gorillas
Vernon's Alex Gillies potted his fifth goal in two games to lift the Salmon Arm SilverBacks to a 6-5 overtime win over the Vernon Vipers in B.C. Hockey League action Saturday night at Kal Tire Place.
After collecting a pair in the Gorillas' 6-1 win over Vernon a night earlier in Salmon Arm, Gillies capped a hat-trick performance by beating netminder Austin Smith, five-hole, on a breakaway in the second OT.
The Vipers had built a 3-1 lead midway through the second period on goals by Jason Bird, Mark Hamilton and Craig Martin (Jeff Kennedy answered for the 'Backs), but Salmon Arm stormed back with three unanswered tallies by Thomas Plese, Harlan Orr and Gillies to take a short-lived lead.
In what was a wild final half a period, Dexter Dancs scored just 18 seconds after Gillies, who then restored the SilverBacks' lead with three minutes to play. But with just 18 seconds to play, Mason Blacklock converted a nifty feed from Dancs to force OT.
In the second OT, Salmon Arm defender Zach Urban earned a minor, which resulted in a penalty shot for Demico Hannoun, whose snap shot was gloved down by netminder Angus Redmond.
The Vipers visit the West Kelowna Warriors Tuesday night at Royal LePage Place.
