A busy year for the Special Olympics
Special Olympics is an organization dedicated to enriching the lives of individuals with an intellectual disability through sport training and competition. Participation in sport allows these individuals to develop social skills, cultivate friendships, strive for and achieve goals and increase their self-esteem.
Our Local has had an extremely busy 2013. Skiers travelled to Kelowna for the Winter Sport Festival, Jonathan Robins & Erin Thom visited South Korea for the 2013 World Winter Games, swimmers joined the Tritons for a local swim meet & also for a swim-a-thon, & bowlers, swimmers & our softball team travelled to Langley to participate in the Provincial Summer Games.
In Kimberley & Cranbrook - alpine skiing, bowling, golf, softball, swimming, powerlifting, Club Fit, Active Start (preschool) & Fundamentals (elementary school) are currently offered. Our year begins with bowling Sept 8 in Kimberley and Sept 9 in Cranbrook and other programs will follow.
We have the opportunity to add curling this winter and are exploring athlete interest for this sport. There is also the possibility for Track & Field and Basketball next summer.
In October, our Local hosts the Pat Mark Memorial Bowling Tournament. SOBC will be bringing the Healthy Athlete program - this will be the first time this program has been offered outside the Lower Mainland. The program addresses the unique issues around health care & communication for people with intellectual disabilities.
Registration for all sports in 2013-14 takes place Sept 9 at the Community Living Centre from 5:30 - 6:30 - a Welcome BarBQ will also happen. We welcome all new athletes and volunteers.Any questions - call Local Coordinator Joanne Thom (250) 417-9781.
