Plenty of valley talent on display in National Rugby Festival
B.C. team rosters were loaded with valley players when the Rugby Canada National Festival was staged at UBC.
The U18 men and women both made it to the Cup final of their divisions, but lost to Ontario.
The B.C. U18 men fell 29-21 to Ontario. Shawnigan Lake School's Guisseppe Du Toit kept the B.C. boys in the game early with three penalty goals.
Other Shawnigan Lake representation on the squad came from Nik Hildebrand, Chris Miles and Jenner Teufel.
The second B.C. team in the men's competition, the U17 True Blues, went down to a 26-7 defeat against Ontario in the division's Plate final.
Local members of that B.C.-2 team included: Shawnigan Lake School's Tyler Beselt, Michael Henderson and captain Wes Wong.
The B.C. U18 women were led into their final against Ontario by Cowichan's Sam Jory, Hannah Lauridsen, Adrienne Saari, Leah Theobald and Allie White and Shawnigan Lake School's Nicole Crowley, who all played hard in the 25-5 loss to Ontario for the gold medal.
"We had Ontario in our pool — they beat us in our pool play, too,'' said Crowley.
"It was closer in the final. It was really bad conditions. It was really wet.''
A silver medal helped brighten the spirits of the girls on one of the few gloomy days of the past two months.
"They were strong, overpowered us,'' conceded Crowley of the Ontario team.
In the men's U16 Cup final, B.C.-1 walked all over Ontario 50-0, with George Barton scoring one of the tries. He had six tries in the tournament.
Callahan McMaster, Cole Milne and Simon Gray were the other Shawnigan players joining Barton on the squad. Carl Smit played for the U16 B.C.-2 Blue team that went 3-3 overall.
The U16 B.C.-1 Gold women romped to a 19-0 victory over Ontario in the title game, with Brentwood College's Ciel Arbour-Boehme, McKenna Haz and Avi Sharabi playing starring roles. Arbour-Boehme posted three tries in the tournament.
The U16 B.C.-2 Blue women's development squad included Cowichan's Hannah Morten.
