Rockets down Cougars for 50th win of WHL campaign
Make it an even 50 for the Kelowna Rockets.
Zach Franko and Damon Severson each tallied a goal and an assist as the Rockets downed the Prince George Cougars 5-2 Thursday night at Prospera Place for their 50th victory of the WHL season.
It leaves the 2012-13 Rockets just one win shy of the franchise record for regular season victories.
Kelowna won 51 times in 2002-03, a campaign which saw them capture the WHL title and appear in their first ever Memorial Cup championship in Quebec City.
Captain Colton Sissons, with his 27th, JT Barnett and Henrik Nyberg also scored Thursday for the Rockets (50-16-3-1) who overcame an early 2-0 deficit.
Forwards Dylen McKinlay and Myles Bell each registered a pair of assists in the win.
Colin Jacobs and Zach Pochiro scored for Prince George in the first period, before Sissons put Kelowna on the board with just 49 seconds remaining in the opening frame.
Franko's 22nd goal of the season at 19:53 of the second period was the game winner and ended a 16-game goal-scoring drought for the 19-year-old Winnipeg native.
Jordon Cooke stopped 18 shots in the Kelowna net as the Rockets outshot Prince George 25-20.
The Rockets will close out their regular season with a home-and-home series this weekend against the Vancouver Giants. The teams will face off Friday at Pacific Coliseum, then again Saturday at Prospera Place.
Kelowna will host the first two games of the WHL playoffs March 22 and 23 and will take on either the Seattle Thunderbirds or Everett Silvertips in the opening round.
