Mackenzie Thompson
Mackenzie Thompson has joined some elite company in breaking a long drought.
The last time Duncan Lanes had a provincial Youth Bowling Canada 10-pin Bantam Boys’ champion was back in 1986 when current owner Mike Frehlick was on top of the podium.
“I’m really shocked,’’ said Thompson when he learned it was 27 years between championships.
Thompson, 11, a Grade 5 student at Tansor Elementary School, won the title at Nanaimo’s Splitsville Entertainment Centre with scores of 138, 119, 145, 148 and 146 for a 696 total.
“We all had a feeling we had a real good chance to win provincial gold — either Mackenzie or Owen Ketch,’’ said Duncan Lanes 10-pin YBC coach Bob Linde.
“The two of them they push each other along. The friendly rivalry the two of them have is pretty awesome.’’
Thompson is a left-hander and uses the clean side of the lane to his advantage.
“I usually try to curve the ball as much as I can,’’ he said.
“I get at least two or three strikes each game and maybe at least two spares.’’
Thompson already uses an 11-pound ball.
“I’ll probably go up to 12, maybe 13 next year,’’ he said.
