Schmidt earns 100th cap, scores in win over Switzerland

Sophie Schmidt celebrated her 100th appearance with the Canadian senior women's soccer team in memorable fashion.

The midfielder from Abbotsford scored in the second minute and set up Diana Matheson's goal in the 79th as Canada beat Switzerland 2-0 in their opening game at the Cyprus Women's Cup on Wednesday.

Schmidt, designated Canada's captain on the day by head coach John Herdman, fired a shot into the top right corner off a feed from Matheson to open the scoring.

Earning 100 international caps is a remarkable accomplishment for any player; it's particularly impressive for Schmidt, given that she's just 24 years of age. She made her first appearance with the national team back in 2005, at age 16.

The highlight of Schmidt's Team Canada tenure came last summer, when she helped the squad to a bronze medal at the London Olympics – a performance which captured the nation's attention.

Canada's next game at the Cyprus Cup is Friday, when they face Finland.
