Royals women third in Pacwest
The Douglas College Royals took third place at the Pacwest Conference college women’s championship in Victoria last weekend by downing the fifth-seeded Kwantlen Eagles 68-41 Saturday.
The victory followed on the heels of a narrow 70-68 loss to the Vancouver Island University Mariners in the semifinals Friday.
Senior guard Patti Olsen wrapped up her collegiate career by scoring 18 points and grabbing seven rebounds.
“We were pretty fatigued but one thing’s for sure, our hearts were not fatigued,” said coach Curtis Nelson, who guided the Royals to their first tournament medal in 13 years, in a Pacwest press release.
They began the tournament by downing Victoria’s Camosun College 61-56 Thursday.
• Douglas College’s men’s team came in fourth with a 103-86 loss to the Quest University Kermodes from Squamish on Saturday.
The Royals began the tournament by downing the Capilano Blues 83-65 Thursday before being beaten 103-71 by the Langara Falcons in Friday’s semifinal.
