Breakers beat Burnaby South Rebels in provincial tourney opener
The Burnaby South Rebels first foray to the AAA provincial senior girls high school basketball championship in 49 years didn't go so well.
That's because the Oak Bay Breakers, ranked fourth in the province, defeated the Rebels 76-48 in first-round action at the Langley Events Centre on Wednesday morning.
The Rebels ran up against a big roadblock in six-foot-three Grade 10 forward Lauren Yearwood who scored 22 points and had 11 rebounds. Stephanie Labbe led South with 13 points while Pav Brar had 12 and Manpreet Nijjar 11.
They will take on the W.J. Mouat Hawks in a consolation round game Thursday at 1:45 p.m. The Kelowna Hawks downed the Abbotsford school 75-73 in the tournament's first game.
