Cowichan just five points off the lead in girls’ team standings at provincials

Cowichan Secondary School, led by Maegan Kuruvita and Hannah Lauridsen, finished just five points off the lead in the girls’ team standings at the provincial high school wrestling championships.

The Cowichan girls compiled 34 points in the tournament, second only to Alberni’s leading 39. Carson Graham broke a deadlock with Port Moody and St. Thomas More by having more wrestlers with higher placings after all three schools tallied 33 points.

Smithers and Kamloops tied for sixth with 28 points each. Sentinel (25), North Kamloops (22) and Elphinstone (18) rounded out the top 10.

W. J. Mouat of Abbotsford had the most points on the boys’ side with 61. Lord Tweedsmuir was next with 49 followed by St. Thomas More (44), Charles Tupper (43), Rick Hansen and Alberni (38), Queen Elizabeth (37), M.E.I. (31), Yale (28) and Tamanawis (25).

Alberni finished ahead of St. Thomas More in the aggregate. A tie at 77 points apiece was broken by the number of champions.

Sentinel came out third best in aggregate points with 47.
