Hoopfest a big success at Lewis Centre gym
The second annual Salish Sea Hoopfest wheelchair basketball tournament was held Sunday, Feb. 24 in the Courtenay Lewis Centre.
With 38 participants and dozens of local folks cheering on the teams, the fast-paced sport held round robin games between the Powell River Ravens, the Nanaimo Tsunami and the Comox Valley Coyotes. Referee Fred Riel ensured that the sport was fun, fair and fast.
This is the second year that the Comox Valley Wheelchair Sports Society has held the tournament. "Each year it gets better!" said Karin Kratz, president for the CVWSS. "We are very grateful to the local sponsors – Quality Foods and 97.3 the Eagle – for their continued support, and to BC Wheelchair Basketball and Wheelchair Basketball Canada for helping us make this tournament happen."
The Comox Valley Coyotes practise every Friday night at the Comox Community Centre. While Nanaimo and Powell River have "city league" teams, Comox Valley is part of the "recreational division" for BC Wheelchair Basketball.
