Rebels, Lions reach hoop provincials
The Burnaby South Rebels and Burnaby Mountain Lions will play in the B.C. AAA senior boys basketball tournament.
The Rebels advanced to the prestigious provincials by defeating the Lions in the semifinals of the Lower Mainland zone championships at Kitsilano secondary Wednesday. They will take on Kitsilano's Blue Demons in the Lower Mainland final at Kitsilano Friday (7:30 p.m.) to determine the top representative to the B.C. tourney which will be held in Langley March 12-16. Kitsilano, who are ranked fourth in the province, downed No. 7 Churchill Bulldogs 65-54 Wednesday.
The Lions gained their spot by downing Richmond's Burnett Breakers 67-62 Thursday to advance to the third place game against the St. George's Saints on Friday (5:45 p.m.). Burnett and the Churchill Bulldogs from Vancouver will play for the fifth berth Friday.
Burnaby's Byrne Creek Bulldogs were eliminated when they were defeated by St. George's 88-68 Wednesday.
