Tough loss for Cowichan juniors in island semifinal
Cowichan Junior Thunderbirds lost just their third game of the season and finished third in the Island junior boys' basketball championships at Vanier.
Cowichan and St. Michael's, easily the best two teams in the tournament, wound up facing each other in a semifinal game. St. Michael's won the game 53-42 and went on to take the Island championship by thrashing Oak Bay 76-38 in the final.
Cowichan secured third and the final berth into the provincial tournament at Vancouver College next week by beating John Barsby 62-46.
The T-Birds opened the tournament last Thursday with a 55-31 victory over host Vanier. Josh Charles scored 19 points in the win while Travis McDonald and Jordy Frost added 10 apiece.
Charles (15), Frost (11) and McDonald (10) accounted for all but six of Cowichan's points among them in the tough loss to St. Michael's Friday.
Cowichan went on to play an elimination game against Lambrick Park Saturday and prevailed 55-39. Charles again led the way with 24 points while McDonald had 12 and Tyler Hudson contributed 11.
Charles exploded for 42 points in the victory over John Barsby. McDonald backed him up with a dozen.
Cowichan's overall record heading into the provincials is now 26-3.
