Kwalikum Secondary School’s Grade 9 girls basketball team has been on a tear this year, and the team took care of business on home court on the weekend, going 3-0 to finish first at the Island finals and punch their ticket to the provincials.

KSS hosted the Grade 9 Island final’s six teams on Friday and Saturday.

“The girls are pretty excited,” KSS teacher/coach Ruth Stefanek confirmed after her team rolled to 32-16 win over the Cumberland Cougars in the tournament final, played out at The Nest at KSS.

The Kondors went unbeaten in their three games on the weekend and outscored their opponents 148-38 to clinch the Island title and the best of the two Island berths to the B.C.’s. Duncan’s Queen of Angels school is the other Island team to advance.

Earning Player of the Game honours for KSS on the weekend were Larissa Stefanek, Jenna Milne and Sydney Holland.

Also earning props for their offensive output were Grace Yacoboski, Maya Steen and Jordanne Hansen.

Most of the team has been together for a few years now — six of them started with Ruth back in Grade 4 when she was coaching at Qualicum Elementary School.

This year’s crop of Kondors were also undefeated in league play at 5-0.

“It was our goal at the beginning of this season to make the provincials, and we made it,” said Stefanek. “They’re a very dedicated bunch that have fun playing basketball.”

The 2013 B.C. High School Sports Grade 9 Girls provincials go this Thursday through Saturday at the Richmond Olympic Oval.

“That will be huge for the kids to be playing in there,” said Ruth.

All this she says bodes well for KSS senior girls basketball down the road.

IN OTHER NEWS: Ballenas didn’t field a Grade 9 girls team this year, but faired well in the junior girls division.

KSS and BSS senior girls teams both advanced to Island finals held in Victoria over the weekend. Neither team advanced to the B.C.’s.

RIM BITS: The Oceanside Basketball Club is ramping up for another season. OBC is open to any area girls grades 7-11. For more info, contact Ruth at rstefane@sd69.bc.ca.
