Heartbreak on ice at Coyote Cup
The Coyote Cup speed-skating meet was held on the weekend of Feb. 23 and Feb. 24 at McArthur Island Sport and Entertainment Centre in Kamloops.
Included in the competition was this 300-metre race featuring five skaters.
The race saw the youngsters do three laps of the Olympic-size ice surface at McArthur and resulted in a heartbreaking finish for Summer Bogetti-Smith of the River City Racers.
As can be seen in the video, Bogetti-Smith led right until a few feet from the finish line, when an unfortunate spill allowed Tessa Elliot from Salmon Arm to capture first at the last second.
Bogetti-Smith recovered to snare second, followed by Rebecca Thomas, Evangeline Kampman and Lucia Neuls, all representing the Kamloops Long Blades.
Next up on the speed-skating calendar are the North American Long Track Championships this weekend (March 1 to March 3) in Salt Lake City, Utah, and the B.C. Short Track Championships this weekend in Mission (March 1 to March 3).
