Baby ’Bellies capture crowns

Two New Westminster Minor Lacrosse Association squads captured provincial field lacrosse championships on the weekend.

The under-16 Salmonbellies boys team downed Port Coqutilam 11-4 in the final at Victoria on Monday. In the round robin they scored victories over Victoria (14-8), PoCo (6-4) and Pacific Rim (12-5) while tying Surrey (6-6) before losing their final round-robin match Monday morning to Coquitlam, 5-2. Nikolas Lund-Murray of New West was named the division’s most valuable player.

In Langley, New West’s under-12 girls team cruised to a provincial title culminating with an 8-3 triumph over a combined Burnaby/Ridge Meadows. En route to the title they defeated Langley (9-7), Burnaby/Ridge Meadows (14-3), Coquitlam (7-5) and PoCo (8-4).

The under-12 boys team went through the round robin undefeated but finished second in Victoria losing 5-3 to Coquitlam in the final, a team they had beaten 4-3 earlier in the tournament. The Salmonbellies squad also downed North Island (15-0), Ridge Meadows (8-3), Pacific Rim (8-1), Victoria (6-1) and Langley (11-1).

Two New West teams came away with third-place in their divisions. The under-19 boys team got the bronze in Langley after defeating Coquitlam 10-5.

Earlier in the tournament they started by edging Nanaimo 11-10 and downing Delta 11-7 before losing 8-7 to Coquitlam and 10-7 to Langley, which won the provincial title by downing Nanaimo 13-8 in the final.

Also in Langley, the U-15 girls came in third by downing the host team 12-8. In the round robin they beat Langley 12-6 and Burnaby/PoCo 10-7 while losing to Ridge Meadows 10-6 and Coquitlam 12-2.

The only New West team not to reach the podium was the under-14 boys, who were beaten by Coquitlam No. 2 8-4 in the third-place game. In the round-robin, the baby ’Bellies downed Delta 11-2 and Pacific Rim 10-4, but lost to both Coquitlam teams, 9-3 and 9-2.
