DCS boys seek to maintain their No. 1 ranking

Everyone will be gunning for top-ranked Duncan Christian School in the island single-A senior boys' basketball tournament Friday and Saturday.

The Chargers haven't played many games on their home floor this season so they're looking forward to the championships at DCS.

"That's our main focus right now,'' said coach Heidi Padjen.

The Chargers are among the top-ranked teams in the province, but they're being careful not to look too far ahead. There are some unknowns in this tournament, Padjen conceded, with teams like Ahousat, Bella Bella and Glenlyon Norfolk capable of pulling off the upset.

The tournament gets going Friday at 10 a.m. with Bella Bella taking on St. Andrew's. Glenlyon faces Dwight at 11:45, DCS opens against North Island Secondary — winners of a 61-60 decision over Campbell River Christian for the eighth seeding — at 1:30 p.m. and Ucluelet meets Maaqtusiis (Ahousat) at 3:15.

Losers' bracket games are at 5 and 6:45 p.m. Saturday's schedule begins with a game at 9 a.m. and the final is at 5:45 p.m.

The Chargers tuned up for the tournament with an 81-51 exhibition win over Edward Milne Monday night.

Josh Klassen and Doug Groenendijk combined for 50 points, almost beating Edward Milne's total themselves. Klassen had 26 points, 13 rebounds and seven steals while Groenendijk posted 24 points to go with 17 rebounds.

Nick Kapteyn contributed 11 points and 10 rebounds. Chaz Milne and Alan Park each added five points.
