Spartans make quick work of Dinos, advance to final four

The Trinity Western Spartans defeated the Calgary Dinos 2-0 in their best-of-three Canada West quarter-final match and are now one victory from a spot in the national championships.

The Spartans women’s volleyball team beat Calgary 3-0 (25-17,25-20,27-25) and 3-1 (22-25,25-15,25-21,25-21) on Feb. 14 and Feb. 15 at the Langley Events Centre.

The team needs one win in their two matches at this weekend’s Canada West final four championships at UBC.

Leading the way in Friday’s victory was Amber Brown, who delivered 23 kills — a new program-record for a four-set match — for the second-ranked Spartans. She finished with an attacking percentage of .475.

“I don’t know what it was in the fourth set, whenever Amber touched the ball, it was golden,” said coach Ryan Hofer.

“She made a variety of shots; she was smart: she attacked the ball well and she hit at seams.

“She was outstanding overall, but especially in that fourth set.”

Alicia Perrin (12 kills, four blocks), Nicole Bazin (seven kills, five blocks) and Amy Ott (six kills, four blocks) all had solid matches. Kristen Moncks finished with 16 digs while Kelci French had 50 assists, a dozen digs and two aces.

Trinity Western (19-3) faces Alberta (15-7) in one semifinal today (Thursday) while the other matches Mount Royal (14-8) versus UBC (21-1).
