Hyacks girls rebound to finish third in BNW
The New Westminster Hyacks senior girls basketball squad bounced back Wednesday after suffering a setback Tuesday.
The Hyacks downed the Byrne Creek Bulldogs 61-49 Wednesday to finish third in the Burnaby/New Westminster league. It came on the heels of being upset 70-50 by the Burnaby Mountain Lions in the BNW semifinals Tuesday.
New West will play the Churchill Bulldogs, the Vancouver No. 5 team, in a wild card game Friday at Byrne Creek with the winner advancing to the Lower Mainland qualifying tournament, known as the Crehen Cup.
NWSS was coming off two league victories last week, 72-36 over Byrne Creek and 88-43 over the Burnaby North Vikings. That gave them a 5-1 league record, good enough for second place behind the Burnaby South Rebels (6-0) and ahead of the Lions (4-2).
The Rebels won the right to be the league's top seed in the Crehan Cup by downing Mountain 66-47 Wednesday. South beat Byrne 79-36 in the semifinals Tuesday.
