Canada nets 2-0 lead over Spain

Milos Raonic of Thornhill, Ont. and Frank Dancevic of Niagara Falls had opening day singles wins as Canada raced to a 2-0 lead over Spain in Davis Cup tennis action Friday in Vancouver.

The Canadian Davis Cup team leads Spain 2-0 after the first day of play in their Davis Cup by BNP Paribas World Group first-round tie taking place at the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver.

Milos Raonic, the world No. 15, outlasted Albert Ramos in  6-7(5), 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 in the first game of the World Group first-round tie, and Dancevic followed up with a 6-1, 6-2, 6-2 upset win against Marcel Granollers in front of 6,000 fans.

Dancevic is ranked No. 166 while the Spaniard was No. 34.

Vernon’s Vasek Pospisil will team up with Toronto’s Daniel Nester for a doubles contest against Granollers and Marc Lopez today at 1 p.m.

A win would propel Canada to its first-ever quarterfinals appearance. The loser will have to play a World Group playoff tie in September to retain their spot in the top level of the competition.

Play continues Sunday with the two reverse singles rubbers. Live coverage can be seen on Sportsnet. For more information, visit www.tenniscanada.com/daviscup.
