Vernon Vipers fall 1-0 to Grizzlies
Myles Fitzgerald fired his 22nd goal of the year midway through the third period as the Victoria Grizzlies clipped the Vernon Vipers 1-0 in B.C. Hockey League action Sunday afternoon before 1,100 fans at Bear Mountain Arena.
The Vipers, who toppled the Cowichan Valley Capitals 3-1 Saturday night in Duncan, were outshot 38-23 by the Grizz, first overall in the league at 28-9-0-4. The Vipers dipped to 14-20-0-7, six points back of the fourth and final playoff spot in the Interior.
Michael Stiliadis (15-9) earned the win, while Austin Smith (10-21) took the loss. Vernon had three powerplay chances and Victoria had six.
On Saturday night, in front of 725 fans at the Island Savings Centre, Colton Sparrow (5th), Dexter Dancs (5th) and Mason Blacklock (11th) supplied the offence as the Vipers stuffed the league's last-place team.
Jamie Waddington replied for the Caps (9-25-1-3). Danny Todosychuk (4-5) registered 31 saves for the win, while Connor LaCouvee (3-7-1) blocked 28 saves in the loss. Both teams unleashed 31 shots.
Meanwhile. Vernon's Alex Gillies clicked at 2:24 of overtime as the fourth-place Salmon Arm SilverBacks edged the Trail Smoke Eaters 4-3 Saturday night before 1,000 fans at Cominco Arena. Gillies, who has 14 goals, tied the game late in the third period to force OT.
