Nelson Leafs roll along on the road
The Nelson Leafs remain tied for the KIJHL's Neil Murdoch Division lead following a pair of road wins this weekend over Kamloops and Chase.
On Friday, Linden Horswill scored 15 seconds into overtime to give the Leafs a 3-2 victory against Chase. The Heat opened the scoring, but Colton Schell tied it before the end of the first period. Seth Schmidt then gave Nelson the lead on a second period powerplay goal.
Chase tied the game at two early in the third, paving the way for the brief extra frame. The other hero of the game was Heat goaltender Jacob Mattes, who made 48 saves. Nelson's Brett Soles stopped 32 shots.
On Saturday, Kamloops led 1-0 after the first period, but Nelson stormed back in the second with three unanswered goals, the last two from James Sorrey, including an unassisted shorthanded marker.
In the third period, Bryce Nielsen scored on the powerplay to pad Nelson's lead. Kamloops scored a late goal, but it ended 4-2 for the Leafs. Nelson outshot Kamloops 39 to 25.
Nelson and Castlegar are tied for the division and league lead after the Rebels beat Creston 3-0 Saturday, although the Leafs have a game in hand.
Nelson can move ahead with a win against the North Okanagan Knights today.
