Rivermen edge Heat in shootout
The Abbotsford Heat closed out 2012 with a 2-1 shootout loss on the road to the Peoria Rivermen on New Year's Eve.
The red-hot Krys Kolanos extended his point streak to four games with a second-period power-play tally, but Peoria defenceman Taylor Chorney scored in the third to force overtime.
The Heat killed off a Rivermen power play in OT to send the game to a shootout, where Peoria's Phil McRae and Jaden Schwartz beat Abby goalie Barry Brust, while Paul Byron was the only Heat shooter to solve Rivermen keeper Mike McKenna.
Brust (36 saves in regulation and OT) and McKenna (35 saves) engaged in a compelling goaltending duel.
Kolanos has four goals and two assists over the course of his point streak, boosting his point total to 15 (nine goals, six assists) in 20 games.
• The Heat (16-9-7, 39 points) return home for a Friday-Saturday set against the Rochester Americans (7 p.m. both nights, Abbotsford and Entertainment and Sports Centre).
