Abacus edges out Red Dog in Nelson's Christmas Classic

Soccer players in Nelson for the holidays had a chance to pull out their cleats in Soccer Quest's annual Christmas Classic coed tournament on December 29 and 30.

Teams played at least four, 40-minute games over the course of the weekend, as they battled for a spot in the finals.

In the masters division (ladies 30 and older, men 35 and older) it was Abacus (white shirts) versus Red Dog (black shirts) in the finals.

Abacus took an early lead in the game and was up 2-0 after the first half. The second half saw goals from both sides, but Abacus maintained their lead finishing the game ahead 5-2.

Abacus team captain Pat Hodgson said it was a hard fought game from both sides.

He credited the strong female players on his team for giving Abacus an edge over the competition (the tournament rules required teams have two women players be on the field at all times).

"The skilled women on our roster really helped us, they were probably our strongest component," Hodgson said.

Overall, Hodgson said it was a great tournament and was grateful to Soccer Quest for organizing it.

"There's lots of families out here playing soccer together," he said. "It's a great thing to do over the holidays."
