Hyacks score contrasting victories
The New Westminster Hyacks senior girls basketball squad scored a pair of vastly different victories earlier this week.
On Monday, Izabelle Datayan sunk a pair of free throws with 14 seconds left as the Hyacks edged Vancouver’s Killarney Cougars 78-77. Meriam Ali led the Hyacks with 22 points while Datayan netted 17 and Camile Sangalang contributed 12.
They followed up that heart-stopping triumph by smoking the Sutherland Sabres of North Vancouver 96-31 on Tuesday. This time Ali had 25 points, Datayan 20 and Sangalang 19.
The Hyacks are 5-2 so far this season heading into their own tournament that takes place Dec. 19-21 which will also feature the Salmon Arm Jewels, Pitt Meadows Marauders and Surrey’s Elgin Park Orcas.
• The Hyacks juvenile team defeated Sutherland 60-8 behind the 16-point performance of Emma Forgie and 15 from Madisen Obrovac.
They are also 5-2 this season.
