Triathletes recognize their best

The Strathcona Triathlon club handed out the hardware at the annual awards night on Nov. 16.

Picking up the award for female athlete of the year was Carla Valentine whose crowning achievement was to tackle the very challenging Escape from Alcatraz race in San Francisco. This race starts with athletes jumping from the deck of a Bay ferry, beside the island of Alcatraz and swimming 1.5 km in cold ocean water with strong currents before embarking on the hilly 40km bike ride and the final 10K run.

Rick Gammie took home male athlete of the year.  He qualified for the long distance World Championships in France in June 2013.

Most improved female athlete was Dawn Locker. Being new to the sport did not hamper Dawn’s athletic prowess as she qualified for the Olympic distance World Championship which will be held on the 2012 Olympic triathlon course in London in September, 2013.  Most improved male athlete was Roger Gionet who made the move from short distance racing to tackle the half iron distance.  Member of the year went to Sue Bennett who worked tirelessly this year to promote the club.
