Vipers take series lead with OT win

All those extra forays into overtime during the regular season paid off for the Vernon Vipers in Game 5 of the B.C. Hockey League Interior Conference finals Thursday night at Wesbild Centre.

Rookie power forward Aaron Hadley netted the winner 5:43 into the first OT period as he pounced on a loose puck behind netminder Kris Moore to give the Snakes a 3-2 win over the Salmon Arm SilverBacks in front of 2,300 fans.

It was the first home win by either team in the best-of-seven series, which Vernon now leads 3-2. The Vipers will have a chance to put the series away Friday night when they visit the 'Backs at the Sunwave Centre. If necessary, Game 7 would go Saturday night at Wesbild.

Meanwhile, the Surrey Eagles staved off elimination in the Coastal Conference final with a 3-1 win over the host Powell River Kings Thursday night at Hap Parker Arena.

Powell River leads that series 3-2.
